Day 228: May 11, 2005 - Desert Phlox by the River

Day 221: May 4, 2005 - The Faux Subway

I returned to this area because it reminded me of the Subway which is in Left Fork in the North Creek of Zion. The Subway is quite famous and well photographed, but this area is also beautiful and has an unusual shape to the rock which I wanted to spend more time photographing.
Day 220: May 3, 2005 - Path of the Water

In the spring I spent time wandering through the wash that winds its way through East Zion. It was often filled with water this year, and I found some really awesome secluded spots like this one, where the water has carved out the rock over the years. The patterns that remain in the canyons, even after water ceases to rush through them, are quite varied and an interesting look at the power of the elements.
Day 214: April 27, 2005 - Clear Creek

As I hiked along the river in a secluded canyon, I enjoyed the complete solitude that can be found in remote areas of Zion. There were no people, and no sound I could hear except the rushing water that surrounded me.
Day 208: April 21, 2005 - Rushing River

There is usually a dry wash that meanders through East Zion, but this year, that dry wash was almost always a river. With the large amounts of snow and rainfall in 2004-2005, this usually dry desert became an oasis alive with the sound of flowing water.
Day 198: April 11, 2005 - Pine Creek Bridge

It was a beautiful sunny day, and I was drawn to the light reflecting off the surface of the Pine Creek and unto the bridge above.
Day 194: April 7, 2005 - Running Water
The snow continued to melt on top of the East Rim, flooding all the side canyons down below with icy cold water.
Day 193: April 6, 2005 - Slot Canyon Light
I'd been to this section of the canyon before, but tonight I was walking around with a spot light making long exposures on rocks or fallen trees while I briefly shined the stop light on the scene to brighten the image.
Day 172: March 16, 2005 - Glowing Leaves by the River
I walked down by the river now flowing in the usually dry wash, and loved the light from the setting sun that glowed on the trees and the water.
Day 153: February 25, 2005 - Landslide
On our way to Zion we saw this sign, and hoped we would still be able to get to the park. As it turns out the road was not closed before the park, but actually there was a landslide that blocked the switchbacks that lead to the Zion Tunnel. We stopped at the Canyon Overlook trail and hiked up hoping to get a view of the landslide.

The landslide was around a bend where we couldn't see it, but the Canyon Overlook Trail is a great hike. It follows a river part of the way. Here is a view of the river from the trail, which follows a rocky ledge above the river.
Day 138: February 10, 2005 - Icy River

I like the way the ice curls around the rocks, giving the frozen river a sense of movement.

Day 109: January 12, 2005 - Fast Moving Streams
The skies have cleared, but the warm weather continues to melt the snow, which continues to cause flooding problems for residents along the Virgin River in Washington County. The washes in Zion National Park which were usually dry, flowed with raging fast moving streams.
Day 106: January 9, 2005 - Flash Flood

After several days of heavy snow, the temperatures warmed up, and the snow was followed by rain. This was the start of a historic 100-year flash flood, which devestated downstream Washington County.

What started in East Zion as little waterfalls completely flooded Pine Creek, with the river being added to by waterfalls from canyons throughout the park.
We of course hiked down toward the flooded Pine Creek area for a better view and better photos, and had to stop for a bit of fun.
Day 6: October 1, 2004 - La Verkin Creek Trail
The La Verkin Creek Trail, in the Kolob section of Zion, offers hikers the possibility for backcountry camping and hiking. These photos are from day 1 of an overnight trip near the La Verkin Creek.

No Pat No, Don't Sit on That!
I enjoy scenic landscapes, but I often look around me for unusual plants, rocks, or flowers -- the small things most people miss. This photograph of a funky spiral shaped branch was taken with my 1:1 macro lens.

Jacuzzi Tub
On a hot summer's day it would be nice to return to this spot. But we arrived on a brisk fall evening. Instead of swimming in the cool water, we filtered it and made hot chocolate.

The only tarantula I have ever seen in the wild. Tarantula's are rare in Zion, but the best opportunity to see one is in the fall, their mating season.
