Day 322: August 13, 2005 - Weeping Rock

Weeping Rock is one of the most visited trails in Zion. It is notoriously difficult to get a great photograph of, because of the strong shadows. I tried to use the shadows to my advantage here,
balancing the top shadow from the cove in the upper left corner with the dark sign in the lower right.

Day 112: January 15, 2005 - Sunshine on Ice

The sun came out and the tourists came back to Weeping Rock. I already took a picture of this, but with the sun shining down I wanted to take another photo before the unique ice at the base of the waterfall melted away.

Day 110: January 13, 2005 - Frozen Weeping Rock

The weather was very unique this year. The rapid changes in temperature from one day to the next led to waterfalls, icicles, and frozen plants that we have not experienced any other year in the park. The weather got so cold this morning that the plants all around this waterfall froze inspite of the water pouring down on them.

This large waterfall in front of Weeping Rock is usually just a trickle of water, but this winter it turned into a stunning waterfall from all the snow melt.

Day 27: 10/22/2004 - Weeping Rock & Telephone Canyon Falls

Weeping Rock is one of the most popular trails in Zion, probably because it is so easily accessible. Water from Echo Canyon located above gradually seeps through the sandstone in a 1000 year-long process of filtration and gets pushed out through the rock face where hanging gardens of plantlife thrive in the permanent dew. However, the view at Weeping Rock is usually not as specatular as what I witnessed this day. In this photograph, rain water is pouring out from Echo Canyon above, bypassing the slow process of seeping through the sandstone.

This waterfall, located near the entrance to the Zion Narrows, is usually present during and just after rainfall in Zion. I love the effect of the towering canyon walls and magnificent waterfall as murky brown floodwater from the Virgin River rushes by in the foreground.
